Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences
Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, formerly known as National University of Iran, was established on 20th March 1960 by the late Dr. Ali Sheikh Al-Islam. The first university that operated under a board of trustees known as the “Heiat-e-Motamineen” was National University of Iran. In the 1980s, after the martyrdom of Dr. Beheshti, and upon the suggestion of Dr. Ahmad Sarmad, the then president of National University of Iran, the university’s name was changed to Shahid Beheshti University.
The Faculty of Medicine has 10 basic science departments with 100 faculty members and 30 clinical science departments with 725 faculty members. Iran University of Medical Sciences
The Faculty of Medicine at Iran University of Medical Sciences was formed by the merger of two medical schools: the Ayatollah Taleghani Medical Complex and the Iran Medical Center. The Iran Medical Center began admitting medical students at the bachelor’s level in 1975, and the Ayatollah Taleghani Medical Complex had previously operated under the name “Medical Education Complex of the Red Lion and Sun Society of Iran” before the Islamic Revolution.
In 1986, when the law for the establishment of the Ministry of Health, Treatment, and Medical Education was drafted and the ministry was formed, the Ayatollah Taleghani Medical Complex merged with the Iran Medical Center to create the Faculty of Medicine at Iran University of Medical Sciences.

With the approval of the medical program by the Council for Evaluating University Expansion in 1990 and the addition of the medical program to the educational and research programs of the Regional Health and Treatment Organization of Kurdistan Province, this entity transformed into the Faculty of Medicine of Kurdistan Province. In 1992, it changed its name to Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences, and the Faculty of Medicine became one of the university’s faculties.
